Hotel Reservation for a Visa, Without Paying for the Stay

Visa applications ask where you will stay. They rarely ask you to have paid for it, which is why a confirmed reservation is the normal way to answer.

What the file needs to show

• A real property, with its address
• Dates covering your stay, matching your flight reservation
• The names of the guests, as in the passports
• A reservation number that identifies the booking

What it is not

It is not a paid stay, and it does not pretend to be. It is a reservation held for your dates. If your plans change or the visa is refused, you have not paid for rooms you will not use.

The common mistake

Booking accommodation for dates that do not match the flights. A file where the traveller lands two days before the hotel opens its doors invites exactly the scrutiny the documents were meant to prevent. Book the flight reservation first, then match the hotel to it.

When you do need a paid booking

Some missions require a paid, non-refundable reservation, and some require the payment receipt alongside it. That requirement is set by the consulate. Read its current checklist — where it asks for a paid booking, no reservation voucher satisfies it, whatever a seller tells you.
