Schengen Visa Flight Reservation

A Schengen application asks for a travel itinerary covering entry to and exit from the Schengen area, alongside accommodation and insurance. It does not, as a rule, ask you to have bought the flights.

What the file needs to show

  • Entry and exit dates inside the period you are applying for
  • The country you are entering, consistent with the consulate you applied to
  • A reservation that can be verified
  • Dates that match your accommodation booking and your stated plan

The main filing error

Inconsistency. A flight arriving on the 4th with a hotel booked from the 6th, or a first entry into a country other than the one whose consulate is handling the file, raises questions the document was supposed to close. Make the itinerary, the accommodation and the application agree.

Why not buy the tickets first

Schengen refusals happen, appointment dates move, and non-refundable fares for a family are a serious sum to put at risk before a decision exists. A held reservation shows the same intent for a fraction of the exposure.

The exception worth knowing

Individual consulates and visa centres set their own document lists, and a few ask for confirmed bookings. Check the current checklist for the specific mission handling your application — not a general guide, and not last year’s version.

Time the reservation so it is still live on your appointment date. An expired PNR is the most common avoidable problem in an otherwise complete file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy flights before a Schengen visa is approved?
Generally no. The application asks for an itinerary, and a verifiable reservation normally satisfies it. Confirm against the checklist of the mission handling your file.
Does the reservation need to cover both directions?
It should show entry to and exit from the Schengen area within the period you are applying for, and agree with your accommodation dates.
Which consulate should I apply to?
Normally the country of your main destination, or of first entry where the stay is evenly split. Your flight itinerary should be consistent with that choice.
How long should the reservation stay valid?
It should be live on the day the file is submitted and ideally while it is being assessed. Book it close to the appointment rather than weeks ahead.

Smooth group booking for 22 colleagues
We booked a 22-seat corporate group fare with Airline Group Booking. Seats were held on a small deposit and we submitted passenger names later — far cheaper and less stressful than buying 22 individual tickets.

Perfect for our wedding party
We had 40 guests flying to Goa for the wedding. The team negotiated a great group fare and gave us one combined invoice. Someone was reachable 24x7 whenever we had a change.

Saved on our school tour
Organised a student group of 35 to Jaipur. The fare stayed locked even when live prices went up, and name changes were handled without any fuss. Very useful for a school budget.

Held fare, flexible names
Loved that we could hold the seats first and confirm names later. They made a complex 18-person multi-city itinerary feel simple.

Best option for our conference delegates
Booked 60 delegates across two cities for an annual conference. One point of contact, group discounts and consolidated billing made my job so much easier.

Great support for a family group
We were 14 people travelling together for a family reunion. The group desk found seats together for everyone and answered all our questions patiently.
